Bookfair is Coming!

Our 54th annual Bookfair will be held at Perimeter Mall from September 22 through September 29 this year.  There are many changes from previous years, as Barbara Buchanan has noted:

Let’s make this 54th BookFair as big as ever, even though we will have a smaller space!

Remember: Opening night sale has been moved up to Monday at 5:30 so we need lots of energetic volunteers for Sunday night move-in and all day Monday! We will also need extra “roving” cashiers and assistants using tally sheets opening night.

Please use the convenient signup form that can be filled out and emailed to Barbara.  Your participation is absolutely necessary, so be sure to sign up for at least three shifts, particularly those marked as “peak” or “critical”.

Get Ready for Fall with AAUW Atlanta at our September 8 meeting

Our kickoff meeting of the 2013-2014 Branch year will be held on Sunday, September 8 on the Agnes Scott campus (141 E. College Avenue, Decatur, GA 30030).  We will convene in the Woltz reception room in Rebekah Scott Hall from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.  Students who attended the 2013 National Conference for College Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL) will tell us about their experiences.  Light refreshments will be served.

Please plan to bring at least one guest to this meeting to acquaint them with our Branch and AAUW.  RSVP to hospitality@aauwatlanta.org no later than Wednesday, September 4.  See you there!

Going Forward

Our May meeting was not only the end of this Branch year’s (2012-13) activities but the start of our 2013-2014 work.  Sharon Bevis-Hoover will begin her second year as Branch president and will be orienting our new president-elect, Dr. Myra Carmon, who will succeed Sharon next May.  Other officers elected include Marcy Nader as Board secretary (2013-2015), Jo Marie Dogali as Branch meeting secretary (2013-2015), and a nominating committee for 2013-2014:  Betty Arden, Pat Bevis, Ruth Yurchuck, and Phyllis Miller, chair.

The Board met on June 15 to discuss plans for the upcoming year and to elect Betty Arden to serve the remaining term of Myra Carmon as Program Vice-President.

We are also delighted to report that our 2012-13 Branch intern, Amira Saleh, will be continuing to serve in this position for another year–but with a big difference.  Amira has accepted a job offer with the Center for Inspired Teaching in Washington, D.C., where she will be a teaching fellow in their Inspired Teacher Certification program starting in July.  Amira will still manage our monthly newsletters and help prepare our 2013-14 yearbook.

Thanks to everyone who supported Branch activities this past year, and we look forward to your continuing involvement.

AAUW Atlanta Branch Celebrates May with Election and Installation of New Officers

The meeting we most look forward to is just a few weeks away!  Our annual brunch at the Ansley Golf Club (196 Montgomery Ferry Drive, Atlanta) will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2013 from 9 am to noon.  We will meet in Ballroom 1, enjoy a delicious brunch of fruit, scrambled eggs, grits, hash browns, sausage, bacon, biscuits and muffins, juices, and tea and coffee–what a bargain for $25.00!  You should have received an evite for this meeting but if not, please RSVP to hospitality@aauwatlanta.com by May 15.

Georgia State University (GSU) is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, and we have invited Dr. Risa Palm, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, to be our guest.  She will briefly talk about current and future GSU initiatives.  The business meeting, which includes election and installation of officers, will begin at 10 am.  Valet parking is recommended as the club has many functions going on that morning.  The Club’s telephone number is 404.875.1687.

Directions:  (From Piedmont and Peachtree). Go south on Piedmont, pass
under the expressway and pass Cheshire Bridge Road. Look for Rock
Springs Church on your right and make an immediate right onto Montgomery
Ferry Drive. Continue through the light (Monroe Drive) and cross the
bridge. The club house will be on the right.

Please plan to attend this special occasion–you really need to be there!

Annual Dues are Due

At the recently concluded AAUW of Georgia convention, delegates voted to reduce current state dues by $10.00  What that means to you as an Atlanta Branch member is that your 2012-14 dues will be $77.00.  Please bring a check, made out to AAUW Atlanta Branch in that amount, to our May Branch meeting at Ansley Golf Club and give it to our Membership co-chair Billie Collier.

Thanks in advance for your support of AAUW Atlanta Branch.  We look forward to another year of progress.

Time to Vote!

All AAUW members are in the process of voting online for new national officers, public policy proposals, and a proposed bylaws amendment.  Online voting will be open until 9 pm on June 10.  Paper ballots can be requested between April 1 and May 2 at midnight and must be posted by May 17 at midnight.

All the information you need for voting is in the Spring/Summer issue of OUTLOOK; on the back page you will find your member ID and voter PIN.  If you have identified the candidates you support beforehand, the whole process is very fast. On the ballot, you can also click to find candidate information.

Make your voice known about AAUW’s future by casting your vote!
